When Harry met Sally

harsal.jpgThe movie is about long time friends who have hidden feelings for each other but rule out giving into their erotic sides due to fear of breaking a longstanding friendship. The stories being discussed in the scene where Sally faked an orgasm was actually a collection of stories from couples the director had compiled. The museum scene where Billy Crystal spoke “But, I would be proud to partake of your pecan pie” was not in the script and was an adlib by Billy. Sally was looking towards the director who signaled her to just go along with it. The famous quote, “I’ll be having what he’s having” was suggested by Billy Crystal and was not in the actual script. The fake orgasm on the other hand was a suggestion from Meg which the director loved and inserted into the script.

The Matrix (1999)

matrix.jpgIn a futuristic world where humans are simply used as computer chips and power sources living in a seemingly natural virtual world along with the rest of humanity, with the exception of rebels who are fighting to restore order by revealing the truth. The computers/machines have taken over the world and they control humans (similar to the Terminator films with a twist) who live in capsules connected only to the reality they call their lives by the machines who control them. The film almost got cancelled when while shooting the helicopter scenes the pilots unknowingly flew into restricted Sydney Australia airspace. The laws were revised to give way to the film. The sidearm’s of the Agent was the Dessert Eagle .50 AE. The scene where Neo was flushed from the holding tank into a lake was the very last shot filmed. Keanu also did the wall climb sequence 34 floors in all. In the movie, Morpheus compares the human body to be a 120 Volt battery that produces 25,000BTU’s of body heat (ouch, does scorched give a hint?).

Die Hard

dihard.jpgAlso one of the most memorable and profitable action film series of all time, the film has a regular Cop assume the role of a superhero as he takes down the bad guys as he simply wants to meet with his wife whom he is having marital problems with. The original posters for the film did not have Willis in the artwork which was to prevent non Willis fans from seeing the film. It was only later added but proved to be a box office success. A remark by one of the police officers referring to McClain as a bartender is a true description of Bruce Willis who was indeed a bartender before he entered the movies. The Nakatomi Towers is actually the unfinished building headquarters of Fox studios it billed itself for the film. The lead role was offered to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Burt Reynolds and Richard Gere before Bruce finally accepted the part.

A League of Their Own

ownleague.jpgTom Hanks had to gain 30 pounds for his role as the drunken coach of the Peaches. The ending scene which took place in the Baseball Hall of Fame had original players of the league in them. all the scratches and bruises you see are real and not makeup. The actual stadium the Peaches played in couldn’t be used for the movie for it was in a state of disrepair and was condemned. The only reminder of its existence is the original archway and the sign about the Peaches. All the stars that auditioned had to show they could actually play baseball, with the exception of Geena who used a double for stunts. Madonna’s stand in was an actual performer who had worked in Vegas for many years as Madonna. The disheartening scene when Betty Spaghetti’s husband died was so emotional it took three days to film. Renee Coleman’s Bruise remained with her for a year before actually healing.

Some Like It HOT!!

likehot.jpgThe movie was shot in black and white even when colored films were all the rage, and the make-up that was used by the major characters (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) made their faces look green. Marilyn was undergoing rough times and scenes required so many takes (a maximum of 40 at the most) frustration may have had some lines dubbed over for the final cut of the film. The proposal scene caused a preview audience to erupt in uncontrollable laughter that it had to be re-shot for most of the spoken dialogue ended up being missed. Marilyn was pregnant during the making of the film which made her look heavy. Most still photos used for promotional materials had her stand in do the pose with Marilyn’s face superimposed later before publishing.

Tears of the Sun

tearsun.jpgThe movie had Bruce Willis as the head of a special forces Seal Team in the war torn Nigeria as they are part of the emergency evacuation force which aims to get all US citizens out of the country as it enters a brutal civil war. The movie was to be the 4th installment for the Die Hard Series as the sub title but was given it’s own niche due to the difference in settings. The film also lost one sky jumper, who dies when he drowned as the stunts were being filmed, landing offshore instead of on the beach. The knives used on the film were also if the Emerson brand being well used in law enforcement and military services. The film was also the first one allowed filming in a Nimitz Class nuclear aircraft carrier. There was also necessary two-week BOOT camp training for the cast as it was necessary for their knowledge of SEAL operations to make the film more realistic. All the SEAL characters were also required to refer to each other by their character names to improve seal interaction on and off the screen.

Night at the Museum

nitemuseum.jpgThe film was the story of a guy who had to come up with a reliable source of income to prove his worthiness for shared Child custody. The actual inner shots of the film were patterned from the American Museum of Natural History whose outer shots were taken and used for the film. The film even increased the patron ship of the Actual Museum due to interest brought about by the film. Owen Wilson’s role was supposed to be a cameo one but his impact on the overall film had it integrated into the film. The license plate on the thieves van is the initial and birth year of the set dresser Guy Roland. The film was set to be filmed in Montreal but Ben Stiller was not happy working there but liked BC so it was moved there to give way to the actor’s preference.

The Bodyguard

bodyguard.jpgThe death of Diana Princess of Wales cost the film it’s sequel for rumors had her to play the part of the female lead. The awards night had several winners who were actually part of the production crew, such as Mychal Smith and Kay Colvin who won the award for “Best sound”, who were actually the boom operator and cable guy working in the scene. Nancy Garber who won “Best Song” was the film’s art department researcher and lastly, Leslie Morales who was one of the nominees for an unknown award was the film’s assistant location manager. The house which was used in the film was the same house used in the film “The Godfather”, in the infamous “Horse Head” scene. The ending scene which had Whitney and Costner dancing involved a camera move which had it travel up a track and transfer towards a circular one to follow the kiss, the cameraman was flung off the rig the first time they filmed it who hurriedly got up, got back to the camera (which by the way was still filming) and continued to film (they used that actual spinning shot in the movie)

James Bond

bond.jpgJames Bond is considered by many of the author’s biographers as the romanticized version of Ian Fleming who was a womanizer himself. They both went to the same school, same career paths of Naval Commander, loved the same foods namely scrambled eggs and coffee and had the same stature (height). Fleming admitted that his work was indeed inspired somewhat by his service in the Navy’s Intelligence Division of the Admiralty which Fleming actually ranked in the UK Navy. His parents are Andrew Bond, a Scotsman and Monique Delacroix from Canton the Vaud, Switzerland, which were revealed in the novel Her Majesty’s Secret Service. His father being a Scot inspired praise for Sean Connery when he took over the role as James Bond.

Terminator

terminator.jpgThe vision of Cameron of the Terminator was an insignificant character which would allow it to blend in with the rest of us in the likes of Lance Henricksen. O.J. Simpson was scratched due to the fact that such a nice guy would be too much as a ruthless killer. Arnold was listed for the role of the human soldier and Michael Bien was listed as the Terminator which as we all know was switched. The filming was also delayed from the spring of 1983 till March of the next year, because Arnold was chosen by Dino De Laurentis for Conan the Destroyer. The film was released and treated as a low-budget film costing only $6.5 Million Dollars turned blockbuster when it earned almost $40 million domestically and a total of $78 Million worldwide.
